“The Free” Heads to Gulf Coast

Students at First Church are gearing up for Tour ’07. On June 3, members of the youth choir will pile into vans and head out for a 10 day journey in ministry in Pascagoula, Mississippi. The city was devastated by hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Thousands of relief workers, including a half dozen teams from First Church have streamed into the Gulf Coast region since the disaster. But “The Free” will go with a different mission, said Free Director Josh Melcher.

“Working in a disaster zone is usually all about rebuilding the community. We want to go there to help people in Pascagoula rebuild community among one another.”

Students will be spending time working on traditional mission projects, but their primary ministry will be through music and drama as they reach out to those affected by the storm.

“We will be in churches and in retirement homes, and we’re even planning a community barbecue and concert in a very poor part of Pascagoula,” said Melcher. We are just excited to be there, to help lift spirits, and spread the joy of serving Jesus.”

Tour will be capped off with the traditional Home Concert on June 13 at 7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary at First Church. Please pray for these students as they travel and be there to support them on their return.
